Gmail password leak: what you really need to know.
Gmail itself has not been hacked. The news is still a reminder that compromised credentials circulate constantly and that prevention remains the best strategy.
What actually happened.
The roughly 183 million passwords in question come from databases compiled by infostealers, malicious software that has been collecting stolen credentials from various attacks.
According to Google, this is not a new security vulnerability in Gmail.
The credentials in circulation were compromised elsewhere and are being reused. Google states that Gmail’s own protections remain strong.
